Course Description



Chris Penney is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work with a particular interest in Child protection and Safeguarding of vulnerable persons. Having worked within both health and social work settings; 10 years as a paramedic within the armed forces and 24 years within social care Chris has unique insight into both settings.


This training will provide an overview of the forms of harm and abuse that children and vulnerable adults can be exposed to. This will be contextualised within both national and regional policy and legislation. It will provide guidance on information sharing, reporting and critical awareness of the complexities of safeguarding and the role of health professionals.


  1. Attendees will develop competency in their awareness of what constitutes harm and abuse and know what to do when they are concerned that a child or vulnerable adult is being harmed.
  2. Attendees will develop knowledge of applicable legislation, national/local policy and procedures in respect of safeguarding and information sharing.
  3. Attendees will develop skills in recognising signs of child and vulnerable adult harm as this relates to their role and be able to seek advice and report these concerns ensuring they are listened to.
