About the Summer School
Gender-based violence (GBV) is an issue of urgent global importance, affecting people and societies worldwide. This course is designed to enable knowledge and understanding of different forms of GBV, how it impacts lives across various contexts, and how people can collaborate to address it. The central aim is to equip students with the tools to understand the roots and contemporary manifestations of GBV and explore pathways toward meaningful gender and social transformation.

What you will learn
Upon completion, students will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of key theories, concepts, and contemporary debates relating to GBV.
Show awareness of various manifestations and contexts of gender-based violence.
Understand strategies to respond to and address GBV.
Reflect critically on their own positionality, values, and assumptions in relation to GBV.
Have an awareness of how to communicate effectively about complex and sensitive issues.

Who is it for?
The course is for students and professionals from around the world and any discipline who seek to deepen their understanding of GBV as a global human rights, public health, and social justice issue. It is suitable for those who have completed at least one year of an undergraduate degree, have relevant professional experience, or are moving into work or research in this area.

Teaching and learning experience
The course is taught by an interdisciplinary team of leading experts. The teaching staff prioritize student wellbeing and adopt a supportive and inclusive approach. During the residential week, students will attend three 2-hour lectures and workshops per day for four days. In workshops, students will work on a variety of activities and hear from expert lecturers, including the opportunity to develop visual materials for display during the conference day. In addition to classroom sessions, students will engage in self-directed learning and enjoy downtime in the vibrant seaside city of Portsmouth.
