School of Psychology, Sport and Health SciencesPhysiological AssessmentsDescriptionWe offer three options for Lactate Threshold Testing and VO₂max testing Bronze - VO₂max (Maximal Oxygen Consumption) Test A VO₂max test is widely regarded as the gold-standard assessment of aerobic fitness and endurance capacity. This lab-based test is performed on either a treadmill or cycle ergometer, with exercise intensity increasing gradually until volitional exhaustion. During the test, participants will wear a face mask to measure oxygen consumption and a heart rate monitor to continuously record cardiovascular responses. The exercise phase typically lasts 8-12 minutes, with additional time allocated for preparation, briefing, and recovery. Following the assessment, participants will receive a report detailing their VO₂max result, along with an explanation of their aerobic fitness level and heart rate responses. Silver - Lactate Threshold Test A Lactate Threshold Test assesses endurance performance and identifies personalised training zones by measuring physiological responses to increasing exercise intensity. This lab-based test is performed on either a treadmill or cycle ergometer, with exercise intensity increasing gradually in 3-minute stages. During the test, participants will wear a heart rate monitor and a face mask to measure oxygen consumption and cardiovascular responses. Small blood samples will be taken from the fingertip at the end of each stage to measure blood lactate concentration. These measurements allow us to identify key physiological thresholds and assess exercise economy/efficiency. Following the assessment, participants will receive a report detailing their lactate thresholds, heart rate training zones, and running economy orcycling efficiency data. Gold - Lactate Threshold Test + VO₂max test This combined assessment includes both a Lactate Threshold Test and a VO₂max Test, providing a comprehensive evaluation of aerobic fitness, endurance performance, and physiological responses to exercise. Both tests are completed during the same lab visit on either a treadmill or cycle ergometer. This lab-based assessment is performed on either a treadmill or cycle ergometer, with exercise intensity increasing gradually in 3-minute stages. During the test, participants will wear a heart rate monitor and a face mask to measure oxygen consumption and cardiovascular responses. Small blood samples will be taken from the fingertip at the end of each stage to measure blood lactate concentration. These measurements allow us to identify key physiological thresholds and assess running economy or cycling efficiency. Following a recovery period, participants will complete a VO₂max Test, during which exercise intensity increases continuously until volitional exhaustion. During the test, participants will wear a face mask to measure oxygen consumption and a heart rate monitor to continuously record cardiovascular responses. The test typically lasts 8-12 minutes. Following the assessment, participants will receive a report detailing their lactate thresholds, heart rate training zones and running economy/cycling efficiency, VO₂max and maximum heart rate. Participants aged over 30 years (for the Bronze test and Gold Tests) or 40 years (for the Silver Test) will also be required to attend the lab for a resting 12-lead ECG assessment (a separate 20-minute visit) before they can be medically cleared to undertake the test. Before booking, all participants must complete a mandatory health history questionnaire. Participants should arrive in appropriate exercise clothing and footwear and avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and large meals in the hours preceding the test.
