This two day  course in fluoride varnish application provides qualified, registered dental nurses with an educational experience in knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills and practical skills. 

This course will enable delegates to provide effective fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and/or on prescription from a dentist or as part of a structured dental health programme.

Course Description

Speaker(s):  Debbie Withers, Senior Dental Care Professional Teaching Fellow & Dental Therapist at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.

Details: This course is to enable qualified, registered dental nurses to apply topical fluoride varnish and improve dental health. 

Learning Objectives:

During this course the candidates will :
1) Be taught the safe practical application of fluoride varnish.
2) Learn the contraindications to applying fluoride varnish
3) Know how to communicate with patients regarding the application of topical fluoride, and gain the appropriate consent. 
4) Understand how to be prepared to communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and colleagues with different social and cultural backgrounds and with different care needs

Learning Outcomes: A,B,C,D

To achieve a certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application the delegates are required to complete: 

A work-based Record of Competence (RoC). There are two sections to the RoC:
Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS)
Supplementary outcomes
A computer Based Assessment (via Moodle) to test underpinning theory & ensure patient safety.
A Practical Skills Assessment.

Delegates will need to provide a letter of support from their practice/dentist in order to complete the practical application RoC portfolio element of this course. 
Delegates will have up to 6 months to complete and submit the RoC portfolio. Full details will be given prior to attending the course.
