Participants will gain insights into the basics of dental implants, asepsis, placement procedures, instrumentation, post-operative care and the role of dental nurses in assisting with implant procedures.

Sami Stagnell, Consultant Specialist Oral Surgeon
Having graduated from Kings College London Dental Institute in 2009 Sami worked across primary care and Maxillofacial Surgery House jobs in the South of England before taking on specialty training in Oral Surgery. 

As a specialist he currently manages and provides NHS Oral Surgery across the Wessex region and is one of the few UK graduates to have held an ITI scholarship where he spent a year in Graz Austria with the Oral Surgery and Implant team expanding his Implantology skillset.

He holds Memberships with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and England as well as the Faculty of General Dentistry.  Sami has completed an MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry and was awarded one of the first recognised UK Fellowships in Clinical Leadership with Health Education England. Furthermore, he is an active member of many societies and represents the profession with the British Dental Association and at the Royal Society of Medicine as well as acting as a Key Opinion Leader to several companies within the industry.

Emily Knapman, Business Manager & Dental Nurse
Emily has worked in Implant Dentistry for 17 years and has managed and run some prestigious Implant practices on the south coast during this time as well as being actively involved in implant nurse training. Emily ultimately moved into a management role and progressed through the corporate ranks to become an area business manager for a dental corporate, since then Emily has progressed to co-owning a new, state of the art specialist referral clinic in Bournemouth.

Kate Quance, Dental Nurse
Kate has worked as an implant nurse for more than 2 decades and has an enormous amount of experience in this field.  Kates experience includes both implant nursing in general practice and specialist oral surgery nursing both in practice and in a hospital setting, she is radiography and sedation trained and is now in a management role responsible for training and mentoring junior colleagues.

Sarah Cruickshank, Dental Nurse
Before embarking on her career in dentistry, Sarah worked as an assistant theatre practitioner in hospital. Sarah’s extensive theatre experience has allowed her to grow into an implant nursing role with exceptional skill and knowledge. Sarah has worked in a dedicated implant nursing role for a number of years and is qualified in dental radiography. She also works as a treatment co-ordinator and takes the lead in managing patient communication and treatment planning discussions.

Details: The Introduction to Dental Implant Nursing course aims to provide dental nurses with a foundational understanding of dental implants and their placement procedures.  Through this course, participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for implant procedures and assist dentists during implant surgeries, developing a basic understanding of instrumentation. Delegates will learn infection control and asepsic standards and offer post-operative care instructions to patients.  By the end of the course, dental nurses will be better equipped to contribute to successful implant procedures, patient satisfaction and continuous learning in dental implant nursing.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session the students will be able to:
1. Understand Dental Implant Basics:
   - Define dental implants and identify their components.
   - Differentiate between dental implants and other tooth replacement options.
   - Explain the benefits of dental implants for patients.
2. Assess Patient Suitability:
   - Evaluate patient factors for suitability for dental implant treatment.
   - Interpret relevant oral health and medical history information.
   - Consider anatomical considerations in patient assessment.
3. Familiarity with Surgical Procedures:
   - Outline the step-by-step protocol of dental implant placement.
   - Describe the role of dental nurses during implant surgery.
   - Identify key surgical instruments used in implant procedures.
4. Infection Control and Asepsis
   - Demonstrate proper infection control protocols for implant procedures.
   - Apply techniques to ensure aseptic conditions.
   - Maintain a sterile environment during implant surgeries.
5. Provide Postoperative Care:
   - Offer appropriate postoperative care instructions to patients.
   - Recognize common complications that may arise after implant surgery.
   - Monitor patient recovery and provide necessary support.
